1 grand is $1000 yes

They do mean the same thing, but the letters come from different sources. 1g = one grand. A grand means a thousand dollars. It only applies to money. You wouldn't speak of a grand of years, for instance. 1k = one kilo. Kilo is from the Greek for 1000. In like manner mega means one million and centa means 100. These prefixes can use for anything you want to count. 1k years in perfectly acceptable. You've probably seen this in Y2K or Year 2 Thousand. G for grand is on its way out. You just don't hear it much any more. K for kilo has pretty much taken it place.

Yes, but G is more conversational, where as K is used more in writing.
