Some extra sugar is ok since your own body is growing as well as the baby's, and you need more instant energy to carry the extra weight, way too much sugar can encourage diabetes. Its best to get your sugar in the form of brown sugar, molases, real maple, try to switch away from white sugar. Brown Sugars etc supply you with longer lasting energy and less chance of getting hypoglycemic -- below normal blood-sugar levels that give you that strong urge for bingeing on more sugar. Better yet, see if you can get more satiated from starches, breads, noodles, rice, which gives you more long term energy, less of the sugar rush and sugar depletion, craving more sugar cycle or vicious spiral from white sugar.
Also, watch for Fructose sugars in many foods... Food companies LOVE to put fructose sugars in foods because it tastes good and does not make you feel full, but rather makes you want more, and buy more, and so they can make more money from more sales...they're business, to make more money, they're not the health department....Watch for fructose-containing foods, and avoid those brands. They put fructose in surprising things, breads, meats, frozen entree's, pop, other soft drinks, pizza, prepared fish sticks etc, drink / punches (as opposed to pure juices). Maybe some fructose from fruits is ok, because the other things in fruits tell you when you ate enough, like the fibre in it, and the other nutrients in the fruits which might be what your body is reallly craving, and you hide it with excess non-nutricious candies' sugar.. etc...Its best to get your energy from foods that are not "nutrient-empty calories". Its best to get your energy from things that have the sugar energy plus natural vitamins and minerals and fibre in them too, instead of candy bars, that are mostly just sugar and flavours. Avoid such fake foods.
ALSO, by all means, AVOID SUGAR ALTERNATIVES, AVOID SUGAR SUBSTITUTES, avoid them like the plague ! Especially phenylalenine, Aspartame, Nutrisweet, These artificial sweeteners turn into deadly chemicals in your body, like formic acid (ant sting poison) and poisonous rubbing alcohol, and embalming fluid chemicals, though in small amounts, it (or its effects) may accumulate, and its effects on the baby may be more significant than to your bigger adult body..... causes varying levels of brain damage, nerve damage, separation of retina from the back of the inside of the eye-- degrees of blindness, Even if not retarded, it could still result in less intelligent than it could be if you avoid them, and learning could be more of a stressfull struggle than if you avoid them.
The right kinds of sugar are ok, Its very smart of you to ask this question. Doctors are good, but they are very busy people, and they may also get sued if they say something bad about Aspartame or fructose or white sugars. By all means, research these items and issues further on google websites. You will be truly amazed by what other people have learned from experience and from research.
Have good sugars in logical levels, manage which kinds you get in your diet.

Too much sugar is never a good thing. Everything is okay in moderation (well--almost everything but I won't get into that here). But when you are pregnant you need to be eating calories that will provide nutrients to your baby. Candy and sweets are just empty calories that provide nothing for either your or your baby. It also helps pack on the pounds. Fruit has a lot of natural sugars, yet. But fruit provides nutrients that you need. So, fruit is a good thing to eat. I suggest you eat other things as well but if you are craving fruit then eat fruit. But I do suggest you cut back on the candy. You don't have to take it all out, just have a bit each day. And please try to make sure none of it is hydrogenated.

You need to limit te amount you are eating. It is best to have the smallest amount as possible. if you were eating a lot of "crap" food before you got pregnant, like sugar and caffeinne and then you just stop cold turkey, your body will go through withdrawls, but you wil be okay. Just headaches and possible tiredness.
I would speak to your doctor, she would know whether you have any health issues during your pregnancy which would limit or restrict you from having sugar.

I ate lots of sugar with my pregnancy and ended up with borderline gestational diabetes and a baby that weighed 9 1/2 pounds even though he was delivered 2 weeks before my due date. Be careful with what you eat.

You need to be careful with your consumption of sugar. Pregnant women are susceptible to getting gestational diabetes. I know several people who were diabetic, some still are. Somewhere along the way, your OB is going to have you do a glucose test to see whether you're diabetic or not.
Good luck.

Yeah, sugar isn't all that bad for you, but you should limit how much you have. You don't want to be eating 2 chocolate bars a day. Maybe if you really crave it, try to limit it to one Kit Kat or tootsie roll every 3 days.

I don't think this is correct. I've never heard of such a thing. I also tried to Google it and nothing bad came up. Enjoy your snickers bar, there's no harm in it. But in moderation of course because too much chocolate and sugar isn't very good for you. However in moderation it's actually great because a study showed that when you each sweets your amniotic fluid is sweeter which babies love and results in them having more fluid and therefore more of your nutrients.
