They start babbling around this time. My daughter said Dada and mama around 6 months or so. My Son however didn't say a word until he was pushing 1 year. It really depends on the baby. they all learn at different speeds and at different levels. For instance my Daughter is 9 months younger than my nephew. She speaks more clearly and is able to communicate her emotions. He has a hard time talking well but he excels with hand eye coordination over her. He can play video games and knows how to write simple words. she can just trace letters. He's 4 years and she will be 4 next month.

This is an Awesome question! I had the same questions a year ago with my son.My son was not a preemie, but my cousins daughter was and she is about 26mo. now and chatty. Also remember every child is different and girls do talk sooner than boys. But my son too was understanding everything around him and doing the same babble with signs that I taught him. which his speech teacher said was great that he was using expressions and signs to communicate. I would definitely talk to your pediatrician. they usually say if the child is not saying 30 or more words at this age you may want to have him tested. I did not do anything for my son until he was 2 1/2. Immediately the Dr sent me for some tests to rule out hearing and water in the ears. then the Dr. recommended me to the Speech Therapist. He started in March with an at home teacher and by October he had excelled 100%. They were wonderful! So I would definitely voice this to the Pediatrician, they should be very helpful in getting you the right help. And the State funded IU-13 was so great! And it was free since I had Chip and may be free or a small fee if you have another insurance. Your Dr. Should have all that info for you. Good luck! You will be so excited to know what that little one is thinking once he is talking and also you will be thinking what did I do. :) lol!

Indeed some earlybirds start repeating single words at age 8-9 months, usually mama or dada, or some favored toy or pet. For meaningful words or concepts, you are going to be somewhere out around 2-3 years. Einstein did not speak until he was four years old, though. Just keep talking to him, talk talk, talk, is how he will learn. If he makes an attempt to copy, be patient and face him and say it clearly and loud enough to be heard, but not yelling.
At five months is around the time when you get the first laugh. Have you experienced that delight yet?

Funny enough I have right infront of me a book that would defintely spark your interest. It's an Early Childhood Ed. text book called Developmental Profiles Pre-birth to age 12 (I'm a preschool teacher can't you tell?!?!? lol) you can most likely get it from the library or order it on-line. It's more of a reference guide with growth patterns, learning activities, safety concerns and developmental alerts. Children develop at different
rates.Your son is in the 4-8 month bracket and might be "talking"(baby babble) and responding to his name and simple requests like "eat" or "wave bye-bye". Talking usually develops around 8-12 months. If he's not talking by 1 1/2 years you should get him assessed. They are precious at this age. Enjoy it!!!!

In my experience, they usually start saying words around 8-9 months. Boys tend to be slower than girls.

Every kid is different so there's absolutely no reason to even wonder about it (unless you instinctively think there might be a problem). Before you know it he'll be having real conversations with you (not to mention arguments!). Congrats!

it depends on serveral factors, from enviroment to brain development.
keep this in mind...we are all talking, and we are all pottie trained...how many of us look at someone else & go
'when were you pottie trained?' etc.
let the baby go at their pace...I know it can be a worry, but its going to come...just wait & see & then you will be going...shhhhhhhhhh to that little one! LOL
