The absolute most important thing you need to know about starting a band is that you are entering into a marriage, plain and simple.
The most important things in a marriage are:
trust, communication, respect, patience, and wanting the same things out of the relationship.
Let me explain my thoughts for you.
You must be able to trust your band mates are going to do what is right for you and for the band. If they are only out for themselves, then you are completely doomed, and should just bail it now.
You MUST communicate with each other ALL THE TIME about EVERYTHING. If there is something that is bothering you, TALK IT OVER. If you let it fester, then it could well boil over on stage, and that is NOT the place for that to happen.
Respect is also HUGELY important for everyone in the band. You have to respect each other as people and as musicians. There are going to be different thoughts, different likes, different values, and different ability levels. If you do not respect each other enough to allow the differences, you will have difficulties.
Not everyone is going to be able to get the songs perfect as quickly as opthers. Not everyone is going to agree on the set list, or arrangements, or other things. Having enough patience to deal with these events is going to help you out.
One of the biggest killers for bands is the fact that people want different things. While you might be wanting the brass ring, and the fame and fortune, and world tours, and all of that, someone else might only want to play the local VFW for beers on an occasional Saturday night. You have to make sure the entire band is on the same page.
Other things of vast importance are:
Rehearsing
Setting down your goals
Agreeing on the style of music
Agreeing on the set list.
Have fun on stage, and with your band... it is a hugely rewarding experience.

1) Find people who are likeminded enough to work together but not so likeminded that you get an "everything goes" mentality... constructive criticism is one of the best things for a band...
2) Don't play any shows right away... don't just rush out onto the scene and do as best as you can... wait until you have a semi-large catalogue of songs (more than enough songs to play one show) so that you can pick the best ones to do for a show... it will be a lot easier to get a fan-base growing if your first show is awesome right from the get-go
3) Practice often... make the band a regular thing in your life... not just something you'll do on the side... the more you're practicing, the more comfortable you'll feel with yourself and your band-mates... it will also allow you to find yourselves more easily if the music becomes more integrated into your life ^_^

know how to play or sing. Get second opinions. You could know everything there is to know about starting a band, but if you suck at it you won't get far.
Also make sure your working with people who are committed to the band as well as regular practice.

if its just a little hometown band, make sure you start it with people you get along with. Make sure you don't clash creativly, and make sure that you don't have someone who wants to hog all the glory and tell everyone else what to do. MAke sure you don't have people who don't really care about the band. That happened to my brother's band...

How to get along with other people. Many bands fall apart because of disagreements.

Practice together all the time. When you're not playing together, practice by yourself.
