Jacques means "supplanter" as a direct translation. Supplant means to overthrow. Overthrow the French aristocracy(technically a monarchy). However, in the book it referred to other revolutionaries without giving a name, keeping identity secret.

At the beginning of the revolution it was a code of identification for fellow revolutionaries, then during the process a form of revolutionary address rather like communists calling each other comrad. A sort of brothers in revolutionary arms moniker.
