all countries bias their immigrant intake to suit their economic needs, and the image they want to portray to other people or other immigrants.

I think america should even give a break to some of it's illegal immigrants because they work damn hard and some of their kids would be brilliant and well deserved additions to the economy and after being the best in their education they find themselves doing domestic work because they don't have papers; that's just not pragmatic from any standpoint.

yes illegal immigrants should prove their worth to social need and economic need, yes they should jump a few more legal red tape hurdles but they should be accepted into the country & not treated as if they don't exist.

In spite of this question being obviously slanted, I'll give my opinion anyway.

The US government should first favor its own citizens. Far too many Americans are below poverty level. As such, the government (regardless of political party) tends to show only the politically correct token interest in them. This government is set up to favor the wealthy in every decision it makes.

With all that aside, once we start taking care of our own citizens, the next priority should be those immigrants here legally.

No matter how much political correctness you want to attempt to throw at this, the government should be under no obligation whatsoever to give any benefits or services to anyone here illegally. They are technically criminals, and should be afforded the same treatment as criminals.

I believe Canada and Australia use a points system. The more educated you are, the better your earning potential, the more likely you are to get a visa. Personally I'd like to see the wealth redistributed to the point where everyone everywhere had a good shot at a good life. Then maybe people wouldn't feel so much pressure to migrate anywhere.

YES! It should favor those who can speak and write at least a minimal amount of English! Dammit, when I order a burger and fries on the drive thru intercom, I want to be able to understand the person taking the order, and more importantly, I want them to understand the order and get it right.

Quick story. I saw on the McDonald's web site that they have Cobb Salads. So I was in the drive through and didn't see it on the menu, so I didn't order it, but when I got to the window, I asked if they have cobb salads. The lady said "Que?" I repeated "Cobb Salad". She says "Salad?" I said "Yes, Cobb Salad, do you have them." She proceeds to pick up a cup and says "Cup?" At that point, I gave up and told her never mind.

It should also favor those who want to become Americans, rather than those who want to remain a foreigner living and working in America.

It already does favor certain kinds of immigration.

There are quotas for countries, those with special skills get preferential treatment for certain visas (e.g. H1B)

So, the answers is yes and we already do.

We want the right kind of people that address the labor needs of our country-- professional and otherwise.

They already do. For the ones who come here legally and start a legitimate business. They don't have to pay taxes for something like 7 years. That's why you see these convenience stores changing ownership so often. The owner will sell it to his cousin or brother or whoever. Another 7 years tax free.

Yes, legal ones. Race, creed, color, national origin, sex, shouldn't matter, but for everyone to have an equal chance then everyone has to use the system legally.

of course!
It's a great way to continue the prejudice and discrimination against innocent people.
