I have a 2000 Chrysler Sebring and within the last week my oil light is going on only when I am braking at low speeds or coming to a complete stop, it immediately turns off as soon as I accelerate. I had an oil change about a day after this began and it did not handle it. Now within the past few days my car has been SUPER sluggish, I have been needing to punch it to get it to go. So is this a faulty oil pressure sending unit? Can I still drive it to and from work only or should I completely leave it alone until I get it fixed on Saturday?

First, don't flush with diesel as suggested above. It will damage your engine. Next, check the oil level to make sure it's between the add and full mark. It that's so, have a mechanic check the oil pressure with a guage. If the gauge pressure is OK, then the sending unit is bad. The reason your car is sluggish is because the oil pressure is the running signal that the computer uses to keep the electric fuel pump turned on. If there is no or very low oil pressure, the fuel pumps shuts off. This is a safety feature to stop the flow of galoline in an accident when the engile stops. It keeps a lot of gasoline from being pumped into the engine or on the ground making a fire hazard.
If, in fact the oil pressure is low, you need engine work. It may be as simple and removing the oil pan and cleaning the oil pump screen. If the screen is clean, then the engine bearings have excessive clearance and you will need an overhaul.

You have to determine if it's a mechanical problem with the motor or just a bad sensor. Remove the oil pressure sending unit and install a shop oil pressure guage into the same hole. Run the motor and see what kind of pressure it is running at. I would be looking for around 15-25 psi at idle when the motor is hot. If that's okay, it is the sending unit or possibly the cluster which you will have to diagnose.

This is what I think your problem may be.....when they build these new engines, they use cast aluminum oil pans. To seal them, they must use silicone sealer. The silicone tends to fall off inside and it ends up clogging the oil pump pickup screen. It is VITAL that you fix this. The first thing to do is to drain all of the oil out and fill engine with deisel fuel. Start and idle for 3-5 minutes and then drain. Repeat this process once more and finally refill with oil and replace the oil filter. The deisel fuel will clean ALL of the sludge out of your engine plus it will break the silicone loose and it will come out when you drain everything. I have 90% confidence that this is your problem and it will fix your car. Do NOT drive this car with the oil light on. As long as it goes off when you accelerate, it will be OK for a short time. You need to fix it SOON. Good luck.
