People are usually referring to economic class sytems, not high school class systems of popular, jock, nerd, emo, etc.
Why do people (mostly Americans) think this? For the same reason people believe any myths. They've been told it from childhood, and it's comforting to believe.
Other American myths have to do with other countries "America is the ONLY country with freedome/free speech/a middle class" etc. (I find these offensive, as, I'm sure, do the citizens of more civilized countries. I see them all the time on this service.)
Fortunately, not all believe these things.

I totally agree that America has a distinct class system but most countries don't have a middle class nearly as large as the US. Most of the world is either rich or poor and nothing inbetween.
High school jocks tend to leave intellectuals alone these days due to Columbine (the jocks are afraid they might get shot). And I've seen an awful lot of tough lower class kids kick the crap out of rich kids. You might want to reconsider your stereotypes?

America is very class divided which are the rich, and the poor, there is no middle class. As far as kids beating up one another that is non mature kids, and with it growing up. There has always been that issue in schools and or the outside. It is a sad fact of life...

Perhaps the people you've spoken to have a different understanding of the definition of "class system" than you. How would you define it? We have different socio-economic categories in America, tons of them. But our law doesn't favor any specific "class". Any conceived class system in America is a misconception, as I have the same rights as the guy who makes 10x what I do. Personally, I've seen more violence initiated from poor people than rich...sometimes deserved, but nevertheless.

there is an fairly definite type gadget. There are 4 instructions of persons: the better type, the middle type, the decrease type, and the out-casts. you're familiar with all of them because the wealthy, the operating type, the poor, and the criminals. What makes the kind gadget in u . s . a . of america diverse than caste or type structures elsewhere, is that any one from any type can change right into a member of yet another type. type by technique of start-accurate exists, and there is a particular animosity from one type to the others, at situations, and snobbery. My mom used to inform me that there replaced into also a fifth type: The no-type, and also you'll locate them in any of the different instructions.

Somehow I think that's been true all throughout human history. There are always social groups the pick on other social groups.
But as adults, American's are not confined to specific economic or social classes. We can move up or down the ladder if we wish to make the effort. We are free to start anew somewhere else.
