All of the above answers are true. Reggae evolved from a style of music called blue beat which was an interpretation of rock music that was popular in the US in the 50's and 60's. It just had it's own sound that was a little different than what was played in the US. It slowly evolved into what is known as reggae.

Like a lot of music, it told the stories of the people who sang it. There was a lot of oppression in Jamaica and people seeking answers looked for their roots, so to speak. Slavery was huge in Jamaica, probably worse than the US. Reggae one could equivilate to the US version of the Blues genre of music.

Some found their answers through Halle Selassie, the Ethiopian prince. Rastafarians believed Halle Selassie to be the true prince and politically and religiously aligned themselves to him. Bob Marley sang about him just like many others.
