I have not had much luck in my job search and an a friend suggested it is because of my previous teaching experience. Any ideas of how would that affect my chances of getting a job? Are there any negative character traits associated with former teachers?

Having been in your position, I can tell you that there are some negative traits associated with teachers... but it's up to you to overcome them in the interview. You need to relate the skills you have learned as a teacher and how they transfer to a new career field. I would think your communication skills would be good, plus you should be great with computers. Use those positives to overcome any negatives. Probably the biggest negative against is that you just don't have any business experience... and they don't think we have to sell Math, English, Science and Social Studies to the toughest customers in the world!

Depending what kind of job and what level of job you will be seeking. The perception that employers have about teacher is that they could be too academic and no real world experience for some roles.

If you have no other experience beside teaching, then it wouldn't hurt to have teaching experience on your resume. In this case, you are pretty much looking for entry level position. And the teaching experience will give you a little bit of advantage over other candidates with no field relevant experience.

Best wishes.

Good Grief no...if anything it would enhance it, unless the Personnel Director hated teachers! Why did you quit teaching, and where do you live? Did you try tutoring? We have a cash business of tutoring. It is very successful.

We make $50 per hr. doing it. And $800 for testing.
