Bring your headphones and I-pod and play meditation music, or relaxation music. Close your eyes during take off and landings and imagine you are in a field of flowers picking one by one. Each flower is different and a different color. Slowly put each flower in a big rattan basket. Smile as you work and concentrate on the smile and the task at hand. Try to get two of each flower.
This will relax you and keep you centered so that you do not feel or hear the sounds of the plane. Flying can be fun to some and scary to others. All depends on how much you fly, what you have heard about flying and what movies you have seen in which there was a bad ending. Stay away from these movies and news stories. They just cause fear that is unnecessary.
Fly more and you will get more used to it. Fly with a partner or friend if possible, not alone. Try my exercise and good luck.

I am the same way, believe me. I cannot even sit by the window, no way! Well, I went with my family just recently across country and between my husband and I sat my toddler. As my knuckles started to get white (the engines were revving up and the plane starting to go down the runway), what did my toddler do? She, at the top of her lungs yelled "blast off"...the whole front of the plane broke into an uncontrollable laughter, flight attendants and all. It was her first flight and she was totally excited and happy...It made my day and I totally forgot about my fears at that moment. Maybe that is what we all need to think like when we are sitting there....just a thought. Prayers =)

I used to be so afraid to fly, so I know how you feel. However, in the last 10 or more years, I've flown so much I've lost all fear. I wouldn't even look out of the planes window. I would be too afraid to get up to use the ladies room. My knuckles would turn white if we hit turbulance. Now I just board, look around, buckle up, and even sit next to the window.. The best advice I can give you is to look out of the window. I'm serious, and if there's turbulance, just go with it. Another thing I used to do, is wrap up in a blanket, put a headset on, and listen to music. Then, lastly, there's medicine that can help with the anxiety. Good Luck, and have fun in Vegas. ~~~~

I am the same way, I take Dramamine so I am as sleepy as possible, "relaxed". I can't cure it unless I sit there and meditate quietly, thinking about happy things. I can't focus on anyones conversation with me but if someone is by me to just talk to me about anything besides flying it helps. Just make sure no one tries to hold your hand, I always have to buckle down on the arm rests. Crying too. I wish we could use tranquilizers, right? haha. Happy thoughts. Planes are safer than cars, or cancer, or murderers.

try some deep breathing exercises. I also hate to fly. never had a problem until I went to the Forensic Seminar in San Francisco a few years ago. Not really the pics I wanted to see. Was on air disasters.
Anyway, deep breathing, focus on something else . bring a book you have been wanting to read, listen to a cd. catch up on writing letters. before you know it, the flight will have LANDED SAFELY!
good luck and safe flying!!!!!!

Ok, you will be fine. There is MORE of a chance of a CAR accident then your plane crashing. And you will be FINE. Take deep breaths, and for the flight think of something that gets your mind off it. Chew gum to also get your mind off it. Have fun.

All of the previous answers are good but, lets face it, once you're in the air you have no more control over what happens. Just enjoy the fact that there is five miles of air between you and the ground!
