I have a 1999 Ford Contour and the gear shift is stuck in park. Drove it to work no problems. One of the guys from work took the console apart and moved this plastic piece out of the way and the car shifted. So until I get the money I have to move the piece of out the way and shift. Anyone know how to tell a woman how to fix this?

The brake pedal makes a switch that actuates a selinoid to move that little piece of plastic. Either the switch up under the dash by the brake arm is stripped and has slid back or the selinoid is bad. Lots of times that switch will get pushed through the threads. Crawl under the dash and look up at the arm that attaches to the brake pedal and you will see a few switches that have buttons on them that are moved by that arm. One of the three actuates the selinoid. Start your testing there. Good luck.

i own a repair shop,ad f you car has an interlock system on it,,you might have to hold the brake down real good to get it to come out of park, also if its in a slight hill that will make it stick in park also, try moving the wheel back and forth a little ,and also try nudging the car back and forth a little,,it may just be the shifter that's hung up,i live on a hill and mine does that once in awhile,,good luck hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.
