I have tried everything the pet stores are telling me to do to lower the amonnia levels. I have added chemicals & emptied 50% water and readded water and nothing works for very long. The aquarium has been set up for 3 weeks.

Don't add chemicals they aren't needed and just mess with the water. Water changes are all you really need to do. If its not working then you are either overstocked, feeding too much, doing something to the filter or all of them. If you are replacing the filter cartridges or cleaning them under the tap then you are killing the beneficial bacteria that will make the ammonia go down.

it takes up to 8 weeks to cycle your tank so you may have to wait it out but change 10-20% of the water every other day that should help DO NOT add any chemicals besides dechlorinator

You can buy this small bag (just like charcoal) that helps with amonia levels in the tank. It also depends on what kind of fish you have and what size of tank. If you have goldfish you need to do a 50% water change once a week in a 10gal. They are very high amonnia leveled fish.

you have new tank syndrome...most get it... every 3-7 days change 1/4 -1/2 of the water .....also i recomend ammquel plus or ammolock, also weekly use cycle !!! it is great stuff it contains the benifical bacteria to help establish and maintain good water ... and weekly after you get the ammonia levels down change about 1/4 of the water always.... and get a filter over rated for the tank...ex: 10 gal tank get a 20-30 gal filter and change them every 3 weeks or so...aftter a month your levels should be normal.... keep testing the water to know where the levels are.... good luck... also do not over stock you tank 1 in of fish needs 1 gallon of water ex: 3in platy needs 3 gal. of water

Be careful not to use any household cleaning products on or near the aquarium. Secondary mist left behind in the air from windex and other cleaning products are attracted to open water like a magnet. If you must use them, spray the chemical on a towel or rag in a separate room so there is nop over-spray. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
