ok, in a storm, lightning is often seen a considerable time b4 the thunder is heard:
1) if the lightning is seen 8 sec b4 the thunder is heard, calculate the distance of the thunder cloud from the observer.

Hi. Most of the time it's OK to approximate the sound as traveling 1,000 feet per second. So 8 seconds is about 8,000 feet.
