I truly believe we do, but I have heard many arguments lately debating whether we truly do.

how did you have the freedom to ask that question?

Hell, no! Have you ever said "bomb" in an airport lately? See what rights you have then. Have you ever told a dirty joke at work? Well, watch out 'cause you can get canned and sued for sexual harassment. If you're white, have you ever called someone the "n" word (see, I don't even have the freedom of speech here to write the word out)? See what happens then! If you're a public employee, you'll lose your job and be in the newspaper headlines for being a "racist." Our freedoms, especially freedom of speech, are being eroded daily in the USA and everyone is letting it happen without speaking out! To think we have freedom of speech is naive. Do you have views that are not politically correct? Betcha do and you don't feel comfortable admitting those views in public. That's because freedom of speech and expression is almost dead in this country.

Not really as if you were to piss off powerful people or perhaps even the self righteous local police powers you might find yourself with legal problems that would make your head spin and your wallet. You can say anything you'd like but there may be consequences including bogus lawsuits and charges brought that you may not be rich enough to defend yourself properly against.

We have a saying, " Just because you can stand on a soapbox and call the President an @sshole, doesn't make you free." What we mean by that is simply because you are allowed certain things doesn't mean you are under someones control. It is a lot easier to keep you in line if you are under the assumption that you are free. It keeps you from fighting back.

Nope. Look at that 14-year-old girl with the myspace page bad-mouthing Bush. He sent his Secret Service cronies to interrogate her in school. The Secret Service...to, according to her, bully her around to tears. Very manly of them. There's also a case in, I think Georgia where a woman had bumper stickers bad-mouthing Bush as well. There was one out of three or four with vulgar language, but now, the authorities there want her to take down all her Bush-bashing bumper stickers.

Trust me, if we didn't have Freedom of Speech, there would be a LOT of dead protesters and people would be imprisoned for speaking out.

Depends on who is the recipient of your "free speech". When free speech becomes an others threat or embarrassment it might come with cost.
