Hi. Liquids can be measured in a graduated container (one with markings for the units). Irregular solids are measured by displacement (how much water, say, they push out of a full container as measured by the same graduated container.) Gases are trickier because the pressure make a difference in the measurement, but again you could use an inverted graduated container to measure the water displaced. Hope this makes sense.
