Ok, so I am on birth control, and I've been taking these other antibiotics. My mother told me my birth control wouldn't work while I was on it. I forgot to take it for a whole week, now it'll be next week when I'm all caught up because I have to take 2 a day until that time comes. Will my birth control still work after this point?

There are two separate issues here. The one that concerns me the most is your inconsistency in taking the pill. Once you have missed more than 1 day of the pill you are at risk of ovulating (thus getting pregnant). If you missed a whole week you are most definitely at risk of preganacy. You need to read the instructions on the package. Depending on which oral contraceptive you are using, and the timing of the missed pill(s), there are different instructions to follow. Call your pharmacist or doctor if this happens again. If you are having trouble remembering to take the pill there are options that may be more suitable for you. There is a depo-provera shot which you get every three months, a vaginal ring that you change once a week, or a patch that you change once a week. As well, you need to remember that the pill (or any other method i have listed) does NOT protect against STD's or AIDS. So you should ALWAYS use a condom. Always.

Second issue here is whether or not antibiotics decrease the efficacy of oral contraceptives. Based on their mechanism of action, It is possible....although no documented cases have ever been reported for most antibiotics. Bottom line - better safe than sorry. If you aren't ready for a baby use a back up method of protection.....don't stop taking the pill entirely.....it will just mess with your cycle.

birth control pills only work if they are taken daily and its best to form a habit of a regular time aswell. with your pattern of missing doses and taking double they will not prevent you from becoming pregnant and could affect your hormone levels. I would suggest following the directions more carefully or you will end up with with a much more complicated problem ( a baby ) if you really cannot manage to take the pill daily id suggest another form of contraception so that you will be covered especially through this time you have been taking antibiotics chat with your doctor and good luck.

no. If you miss a pill, you run the risk of getting pregnant right up untill you start your next pack of pills. Make sure you're taking your pill at the same time every day, sometimes even that is enough for it to not work
