I have washed my cardigan in the washing machine: forgot to read the lable, it clearly said handwash only. It has now shrunk to the size of Madonna's new baby, and I am nearly 30... Is there any way I can rescue it?! And why does this happen?

Why? Its the nature of the fabric. Really doesn't matter, why.

Rescue is out. There is no way you can stretch it back out to the same condition. The shrinking occurred down at the fiber level. If you did manage to stretch it back to something like it's original size, the fabric would resemble nothing like the cardigan you spent so much money on.

There is nothing you can do about it especially if you put it in the dryer. It shrinks because the material is loosely woven, it holds a lot of water stretching the fibers which in turn shrink unless they are blocked back into the original shape after handwashing.

ROFL. Your cardigan is completely shagged. Despite being nearly 30 you would be living in cloud cuckoo land if you think you can rescue that baby from Madonna.

Know you can't rescue it, and it happened because its WOOL, please don't give it to Madonna's kid, she does my head in,,, trying to buy kids. Give it to a Charity shop and the next time you buy a Cardigan read the Label and hand wash wools

No rescue is possible. The high agitation of the washing process caused the shrinkage. For more info as to why it happened, check out the link below.

You might try putting it in cold water and let it soak then while it is wet stretch it out,and try to keep it in shape. let it dry flat on a table, and keep stretching some more as it dries. And depending on what it is made of you might luck out. However if it is wool, forget about it!
