You need a scan tool to read codes.If your check engine light is on it depends on what the code is to find out what it means,if the light is on solid and not blinking that is usually a emissions code and you don't have any drive ability problems.

I think on the chevy's you can short pins 1 and 2 on the OBD plug and then turn the key on. It will spit out the codes on the "check engine" light. The first 2 sets of codes will be 12, then the fault codes (if any) and then 12 again. Then it starts over. Good luck.

You need to use a scan tool that gets connected into the OBD2 connector. It will give you the codes that caused the idiot light to lite up on you. I agree, you can have the codes scanned for free at AutoZone. they can point you in the right direction as far as the repair goes. If you prefer, just go to a reliable repair facility and have the car done correctly.

YOU NEED AN OBD SCAN TOOL BUT AUTOZONE WILL TEST IT FOR YOU FOR FREE but note i really dont like autozone ,really cheap imported parts ,,,junk
