I'm scared of just about everything on the face of the planet, but something possessed me to start reading E. A. Poe. I've already read The Fall of the House Usher, the Tell-Tale Heart, and the Masque of the Red Death. I've got one of those 'complete works' books, so what should I read next?

Personally, I found HOP-FROG to be an interesting, deep-cut story. So few ever talk about it but it is quite good.

Honestly, in the time it takes to ask this question and receive answers that only tell you other people's opinions, you could have typed Edgar Allen Poe into the search bar, read some of his stuff, and decided for yourself whether you like it. My opinion: read the Tell Tale Heart. It's good.

I just LOVE the Black Cat. Very fun if you like Poe. The mood is much like The Tell Tale Heart, very scary and suspenseful. Basically, the man and his wife love animals, and they have all sorts of them. The main character has a strange affinity for a black cat that they have. That is all I will tell you for now :D

Very strange story, but a great one to tell at a Halloween party.

Another one is the Pit and the Pendulum. It involves strange and cruel punishment- an man is stuck in a room, convicted of crime, and a giant blade on a pendulum is slowly descending. There are basically no other characters- a few officials in the beginning and end- there is mainly just the man. Everything is what he sees and thinks. It's a very good story, unless you are using it to lull yourself to sleep.

Which ever ones are in there. I'm going to head down to the library soon to get some of Edgar Allen Poe's poetry and short-stories too. Just flip through the table of contents and find out which title appeals to you most and read it.

The Raven- It is my favorite. Describes every emotion of losing someone. You can almost feel his agony. And my mom's name is Lenore. I grew up knowing about this story and when my mom died, she requested that we put the famous line on her gravestone that says, "Quoth the Raven, Nevermore". I also love the line that says, "Clasp and rare and radiant maiden whom the angels called Lenore. Quoth the raven, 'Nevermore'.

I also recommend The Pit and the Pendulum. This is pretty gruesome, but a must read. You make me want to break out my Edgar Allan Poe book.

Try "Pit and the Pendulum"! That is an amazing story! I also recommend reading the author H.P. Lovecraft for great spooky stories.
