When I've had this problem in the past, it was because some background task was writing to my drive - a write to the drive forces the defrag process to restart.

The easiest thing to do is probably to come up in Safe Mode - so most of the background tasks don't get loaded/started. Once you are in Safe Mode try the defrag again. Here are some "how to" pages about booting in Safe Mode:
http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/ht/safemode.htm
http://www.superadblocker.com/downloads/BootSafe.exe

To get into safe mode, press the F8 key repeatedly when you computer is just starting to load windows - it will give you a menu of boot choices, one of which is "Safe Mode". When you shut down from Safe Mode and restart, you computer should boot normally again.

Another approach would be to press ctl-alt-delete and get the active task display, then use the End or Terminate button to kill off the tasks that may be doing disk I/O in the background. Once you've killed off the suspect tasks, retry the defrag. All the tasks will restart normally when you reboot.

Best of luck!

This happens when some other program on your PC keeps accessing the disk you're trying to defragment. Earlier versions of Windows in particular became very annoyed about this, and their versions of Defrag never really got anywhere.

Either close everything else that you can (including your Antivirus, as the person above recommends) before you run Defrag, or boot into Safe Mode and run Defrag from there. That way, most of your programs aren't loaded and it's less likely to get 'clobbered' by another program trying to do something.

Hope that helps!

May take awhile if you have not defragged in a long time. If it does not defrag then try this..
Try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:
start
programs
accessories
systems tools
system restore
This process is completely restorable.

A defrag requires either 12%or15% free space to function. Check how much free space you have and if necessary delete unneeded files or move them to another disc.
You can also use the "Disc Cleanup tool" to free up disc space. Try this first as this tool will only remove things that can be deleted safely and will let you choose what to remove! You can find all of this in "Help and Support" under "PC Maintenance".
Hope this helps!

Turn off your anti-virus software, then do the defrag. Disconnect from Internet first.
