Revenge of the Sith would be the best one in the modern day. Empire Strikes Back beats them all considering it was made in the late 70's and released in May 1980...

This is a difficult question. It's like comparing apples to oranges. And it's not like they were all made back-to-back. You can't compare the technology of the late 1970's/early 1980's to the technology of later 1990's/early 2000's. It's no contest. It would be like comparing the special effects of the1932 version of King Kong to the 2005 version. But before I go on rambling....

Of the first three (Episodes 4, 5 and 6):
Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back

Of the last three (Episodes 1, 2 and 3):
Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith

I rather answer a question more like, "Do I think Lucas is a sellout?" or "Should Lucas be allowed to work in the industry?". But hey, that's just me.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to say Episode 1 Phantom Menace. The visual and sound effects were just awesome, but the story sucked monkey balls. The pod racing scene is top notch in surround sound. That's usually the scene I use to show off my home theater. Then you have the big space battle and the duel of the fates with Maul (probably the best light saber fight in all six movies). I just wish I could watch that movie without the dialog (stupid kid ruins it).

Even though all the movies had pretty cool FX I'd probably go with Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.

I think it would be cool if they went back and touched up the original 'Superman' movies then rereleased them. I watched the whole Superman series recently and a touch up could definitely sharpen the effects.
