I am currently a freshman in college, studying Civil Engineering. However, I have come to the conclusion that I do not want to be an Engineer. It's just not me. True that Engineers make a lot of money, but I'd rather have a job in a field that makes me happy, than in one that I know will never, in a million years, grant me that wish.

I am really into visual art and writing, though. Those are two of my biggest passions. I want to change majors (from Civil Engineering to Interior Design or some other type of art) and today I met with one of the art department recruiters at my current university. However, she told me that I have to put together a portfolio with AT LEAST 12 of my best pieces of work (by December 10, 2006). I don't know what to do because I don't have any of my really good artworks with me and I don't have any spare time to work on any new ones... :(

Any suggestions about what I should do?

she said to put them together portfolio. this does not indicate that it has to be pictures. a portfolio is a case to hold documents. as i see it. you can write of your pictures and works or you canlet this great dream of yours allow you to become creative and make your best peices of work now. you have two months to make 12 wonderfull peices of art, whether writen or picture. i like written art very much, you can get more though to the reader than you can with the picture, because most people are not creative enough to see all that is in the picture, though pictures do hold alot and can be very beautifull. beleive in your self, be all that you can be. do not let doubt hold you back. let the love of what you want to be become the creative factor that pushes you to excelence............just beleive you can...and it will come....make something new, we need new. the old has worn off.......

Being an artist means making the commitment to create art. Dec 10 is more than 8 weeks away. If you cannot do three drawings in two weeks, you won't understand how commitment relates to being an artist, so don't bother. What kind of grades are you getting as a CE major?

Well.. truthfully arts doesn't make that much money. But it is important that you enjoy your career and the money will roll right in. Interior designers make good money. But like as far as an associates or bachelor's in arts, I've been told that degree is kind of useless.

Well, I would say you better get started. But that doesn't help. Do you have things in your schedule you could do without? Obviously, there's not a whole lot you can do in this situation other than do what is required. Do you have artwork at home you could have sent to you?

go with your natural instinct the one that makes you feel better. don't make the mistake of changing for something that you have no passion for. take the risk in what you enjoy and learn as much as you can. put your mind and effort and you will succed. good luck.

Is there any way for you to have your best work sent to you? If you really want this, you'll have to sacrifice something for it. If you can't, try something else that makes you happy. I'm sorry if this is not a help.

if that is the demand (a portfolio) to be able to change direction then you must provide it...period....is not our problem...do it or don't change careers..

Maybe switch to Mechanical engineering and make construction plans for homes instead, then make your specialty your Interior Design.
