This is certainly not always true- there are femme African Americans, and there are many masculine lesbians of other colors. There are, however, a good deal of masculine African American lesbians. Why might this be? A few possible explanations: 1) that's just the way they are. Individuals feel themselves feminine, masculine, or androgynous, and act accordingly. It has nothing to do with their race, it's just one of those coincidences, or 2) the culture of African American communities makes it easier/simpler/better to be a butch lesbian. Being black is already considered a liability in some aspects, being a woman is second, and being a lesbian is the third in strikes against you by society, therefore having a tough facade is a way to protect yourself. Looking butch can stave off men's romantic or sexual attempts within and without the African American community. Many times that community is aligned with the rap/hip-hop world where you are either a pimp or a ho, and between those choices, the former is better than the other. In addition, female masculinity/power/etc. has been traditionally more acceptable than in other communities, because they are the stalwarts of a home that must remain strong in the face of oppression, and often must deal with deficient men. The answer is probably a mixture of the two.

Have you looked around Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O'Donnell are white women and they dress like men. Some lesbians dress like men while others are very feminine. It doesn't matter what race they are, it is a matter of preference. I am not gay but my sister is and most of her friends are very feminine
