I was thinking of getting a minidisc machine but I thought an MP3 recorder might be a bit more logical. Any ideas where I can find something halfway decent for a reasonable price?

I've heard good things about the old Creative Nomad Jukebox harddrive MP3 player/recorder. It can record to MP3 or .wav files, and has an optical digital input so it can record from a high-quality external analog-to-digital converter or other digital sources. There's generally a couple for sale on the auction sites.
