Algebra teaches you to logically solve problems. It builds the pathways in your brain that help you approach everyday life more successfully.
It will also be used in lots of little situations such as purchasing a home, a car, grocery ad comparison, sports statistics, etc.

For most people not tremendously. But that doesn't mean it is not worth learning.
While the actual techniques in math are, in general, not often used afterwards, the logical approach is. The ability to look at a problem, separate out what is known, what is important, and what is needed, and from there to proceed to a solution, is valuable, and algebra is one way to practice this.
When a mechanic looks at your car or a store considers changing prices they are doing the same type of analysis. Of course engineers frequently use math techniques, but as a person with a math degree I know it is valuable in other fields as well - I have friends who went into law and found the logical approaches they had learned to be really helpful.

I do not believe it does, I left school in 1984 and have never used algebra not ever since. I believe it is a waste of time teaching it.
My partner left school in 1982 and he has never used it either and he was a time served mechanic until last year, he would often use long division. I used to work for the government and I also worked for a large charted accounts firm.
Rather than teaching this they would be better teaching you what is under bonnet of a car, as this would be more use full in every day life!

People dont tend to realise that simple algebra can be a big help in many situation, simply to aid train of thought or to assist in large compliated situations.

Many fields use algebra...biology, chemistry, economics, business, and many others. Any company benefits from the use of statistics which uses algebra. All of calculus is built on algebra (and calculus is used in all the previously mentioned fields). The manipulations used in trigonometry are algebraic in their nature (and trig is used in surveying, mapping, astronomy.) Most important, algebra is a way of problem solving and modeling. But if you aren't going into any of these fields, algebra helps build your reasoning skills.
