By the way, she is waiting to get eye surgery for her cataract and since we live in Canada it is covered by medicare (free).

Cataracts generally affect older people. Perhaps she is on a limited budget and wants to save on electric bills, or perhaps she remembers the hard times of the Depression, and is frugal.

I only see old people doing that and there eyes alreadl went bad.

If she's been knitting for a long time, she doesn't need to look to perform this skill. My grandma is blind (completely) & she knits, crochets, and even sews still.
