My apartment came with an washer and dryer which is great, it's a little old but it does the job. The problems is I think the water is hard. My socks get dingy and all of my clothes feel rough and I'm constantly scratching. I've tried vineger and baking soda and fabric softener which just gives off a smells, I think sometimes these things work but not often.

Any suggestions or is anyone expereince this same problem?

Don't ask your landlord, he either won't know or won't think it's worth his time/money getting it fixed for you. Yeah, from your description, it's a classic problem of hardwater deposits, which not only makes your clothers rougher, they will cause bad damage to the colors and the integrity of the fabric.

Try buying a better detergent, I know for a fact that "Tide" has hardwater scavengers, so if the problem is really b/c of hardwater, then this should work. If you're using Purex or something cheap, those will clean ok, but it won't have enough ingredients to neutralize hardwater, protect colors (dye fixatives), or neutralize chlorine.

Vinegar and baking soda? Those won't help as much as a better quality detergent.

Landlord should be able to help you. Explain your problem to him/her. May need to have a water softener installed to help with the hard water.
