For every individual, this is a personal realization. I think the true litmus test for me was when I drank against my own will. I didn't want to drink, I even swore I wouldn't drink, but within minutes, hours, or days, there I was again with a drink in my hand. But it is different for everyone. Sometimes our consequences, (DUI's, lost jobs, lost relationships, health problems, jail, or rehab stays), are the catalyst for change. Alcoholism, like any addiction, is extremely tricky because it is a disease which affects our thoughts - We will allow our disease to tell us that "everything is OK" even when our lives are falling apart around us. The best possible suggestion I can give you is to get to a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. There you can learn more about the disease, from those who have it, and they can share their experiences with you. Most active members of this fellowship are willing to help you, no strings attached, because thats what their predecessors did for them, and they are happy to pass on the solution.

Go to www.alcoholicsanonymous.com, click on How to find AA Meetings, click on Intergroup in the first paragraph, choose your State, and you will find a phone # or website that will give you meeting times and locations. When you go to your first meeting, pick up two things from the Literature rack - a "Where and When" which is a meeting list for your area, and the "Am I an Alcoholic" pamphlet which may help you decide where you are at.

If you cannot perform your normal daily routine without having a drink, you may be an alcoholic. If you are having more than 7 drinks in a week, there is cause for some concern. Stop drinking for a month and see how you do. If you are constantly craving alcohol in that time or can't not drink, you may want to seek help. Alcoholism can have serious medical consequences.

when you can't get through anything without having a drink. Evening at home, need a drink? Weekend, need a drink? Party, have to drink? Workday, need a drink? It's when you need to drink rather than "it would be nice to have a drink but I can do without".
