The motivation behind militant Islam are the writings of Sayyid Qutb, who visited the US after the war to see what Islam could learn. He said he saw a frightening culture of greed, isolation and ignorance which he felt was viral and a direct threat to any spiritual way of human life. When he returned to his native Egypt he saw the billboards and adverts and saw it had already reached his home. His words were taken as a rally to direct action.
Alqaeda is essentially a creation of the US, whose government needs to outline distinct enemies to exist. There was previously no coherent form to militant Islam, just many with a common objective. Increasingly, it seems, the war on terror has created a distinct organisation.
So if there is an ideology, it is simply that western cultural values are unsustainable and dangerous to a truly spiritual human way of life. Difficult to see a problem there, right? Only they have the same goal as US foreign policy; what is unnacceptable must be destroyed. It is thus a war that cannot be resolved by physical conflict, only by transcending this level of ignorance; I cannot destroy my enemy as he is part of me.

If you mean Al-Qaeda, then broadly speaking, they would like as many people as possible to adhere to an extremely crude, partial and highly impractical and unrealistic interpretation of certain elements of Islamic law. Anybody who doesn't want to get with the program is not worth keeping around, in their opinion.

They're way extreme, and they believe in all that whole God thing, and no way would I ever follow them myself, but at their best they can in fact provide a fairly coherent analysis of why what passes for Western civilisation can so often seem amoral, empty and nihilistic. However, the only alternative they can offer is deeply unattractive to anybody who doesn't want to spend several hours a day praying.

To rule the world. In their dreams.

Theirs would be a loveless world where murder, torture, cruelty and fear would predominate. A world of uneducated, subjugated women and brainwashed young men.

Concerned, balanced individuals should fervently and devoutly pray that all countries of the world will be spared from their wicked intent - by peaceful means.

To level the playing field of the world by attacking the super powers the only way they can. They're responding to many years of killings of innocent people in their land. Unfortunately they're doing this by killing more innocent people. It's a sad sad and vicious cycle.

That might be Al Qaeda...lol I don't know how to spell it either!!!!

No one is interested, they'd rather engage in an unwinnable war....thus creating more and more extremists.

I think they stand for some fairly unpleasant ideas...they'd like the world to be Muslim, and not nice fluffy Muslim, the nasty hardline Taliban variety, following Shariah Law....you know, cut heads off in public, women 2nd class citizens, etc etc

They change like the desert sands. All you really have to know is that they are resolutely anti-human.
