You know the TARDIS translates all alien language into English.

Well in Cinemas and attached to our TVs there is the same technology that translates all communication into English.

The Germans have this too.

I totally agree with Sarah, and that is one of many reasons why District 9 is the best sci fi film of the 21st Century so far - the aliens speak alien! And the film makers had the sense to have humans try and communicate with them rather than the aliens having some devise to speak English. To make matters better, District 9 is also a huge hit, proving cinema audiences - in Europe any way - are not as dumb as Hollywood would have us believe (District 9 is not Hollywood - thank god!). A fantastic film! Hopefully film makers can learn from this.

that we used the rare all British Ice Age extras for this film

they are British Ice Age animals , through and through .
So they speak English .

They would be not be understood, by majority ,of the viewing masses .

Animals in movies don't speak English. That's why the cavemen don't understand the animals (because by then humans did have limited speech).

However, filmakers tell the story from the animal's perspectives, so they want US to understand THEM.

("Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" is the only animted movie I have seen where the animals do not talk and we understand the people.)

Because it was made for Americans and most Americans speak English and aren't able to understand other languages. I don't think it would have done so well if it was in, for example, Urdu, because most Americans, at least in the US, speak English, not Urdu. I mean, if it had been in Urdu, maybe some Pakistani-Americans would've gone to see it, I'm not saying they wouldn't, but I don't think like millions of Americans would've gone because they speak English not Urdu.

You probably don't realize it, but all of the animals are speaking in their native language. And through the magic of science and cinematography, each person will hear it automagically translated into their own native language.

Because it's a movie produced in America and targeted at an American audience. It is the majority language and most Americans are too lazy to read subtitles. Also, their kids probably wouldn't be able to follow the plot if they had to read.
