conifer refers to several types of trees, not all hold there leaves forever, like a Bald cypress or a tammarack Tree. Conifers are Pine, Fir, Spruce, Cedars, Juniper, Larches, tammarcks, Redwoods, and so on. You are thinking of evergreen trees, which never shed there leaves all at once due to low sugar content in leaves due to weather change. A Live Oak is an Evergreen and well as a Southern magnolia tree, but are not conifer trees, but are hardwoods trees. You are confusing yourself. Maples and dogwoods are called Hardwood trees. but I believe the answer you are trying to find is a Decious tree that sheds its leaves.
