The lantern used to signal how the british were coming. You know, one if by land, two if by sea...(it might be the other way around)

Yes. Ciphers (a way of encoding documents by using an exchange system- "A" is letter 1 of the alphabet, so every A is replaced by a 1 and so forth) have been around for centuries. If you need a particular example, look for the case of British Army spy Major Andre. I believe when he was captured, he was carrying information on West Point's defenses in code. That should be easy to verify. And do verify that! I don't want to say anything I'm not 100% certain of, but that case is famous and will be easy to check. Bendict Arnold was the American traitor who provided the information.

yes they did only it was sneaky as they did it... The top letter of the letter in the top right corner of the piece of mail was a periodic table or elemental symbol telling how the person translating it was to do so more often then not this was done with invisible ink which was a mix of lemon juice and water for the ink to the message that would only appear when the proper way to extract the hidden message after it dried was performed

Yes, as several of your answerers have explained, although a message in invisible ink is not properly described as a "code". But more often, because of a lack of technology, secret military intelligence was conveyed by hidden documents, such as the case with Nathan Hale.
