why do people buy iPods? why do women pay 50 bucks for eyeshadow? why do people pay 300 bucks for a purse?? why do we think it necessary to buy the expensive stuff when you can buy somthing just as good for half the price?? are we THAT pretentious?
what happened??

I CAN afford to buy these things, so no, before you say anything, i am not "hating". it just seems stupid to waste money this way.

ipods i can agree with. a 1G is suitable for an average person but a 3G and the ones that have photos and videos... no.

Because today's society demands that you have these things to be 'cool' and 'popular'. It would be much smarter to pay $10 for a pair normal jeans, and then tear them yourself. And $50 eyeshadow? Thats just stupid. It just goes to show how advertising has tricked America.

Some people feel the need to PROVE they have the money to buy those things. It's as if they think that more money makes a better person.
Where I grew up, I saw a skirt in the window of a store in the 'tourist trap' area of my city. It was over $100 (this was back in the '80's). I bought the skirt-well one just like it, sans the itty-bitty brand name tag, for $7. I still have it...somewhere. I think it's held up pretty good for a $7 skirt. I'm sure the $100+ skirt fell apart long ago.
It's funny how no one really noticed (or just didn't care) that it wasn't name brand.

Because 99% of america believes Fashion is important and whatever celeberties and models are wearing must be fashion able.
When it is a model's job to look pretty. That 99% of america believes that wearing brand names like Louis Vuitton or Abercombie and Fitch is cool and will boost their ego. If they want to spend the extra 100 bucks more power to them.

I've always wondered why do they have to spend so much money on things that they don't really need? I've seen them buy something and not using it even once !
And no, it's not just women. A lot of men do this as well !

i agree with you sometimes i mean think about it what would happen to those buisnesses without people shopping there they would shut down plus everyone likes different things this is just your opinon by the way. plus maybe the certain makeup they buy helps them in ways that you dont know its not their fault and it depends what looks good on them too. ipods can be used for many things i use ipod video and so does everyone in my family has one to like my dad uses his to store his work stuff and notes in it everyone has reasons to buy them

I agree, But people are pack animals and have to show off . It is a class association I believe. The more expensive the stuff the higher standing in class is to be perceived.

as a society we are all greedy and try to out do the other by having something better or more expensive, i believe you should buy or do what makes YOU happy not others! if you can get the same eye shadow for $5 then do it, who will know ? unless you tell them. please don't buy into the BS that more expensive is better, this will-only force you to live beyond your means which believe me will make you VERY unhappy. good luck!

I don't know. See I ride horses so I am very capeable of riping and tearing my own jeans. I don't need somebody telling me to spend 100 bucks to look "terific" when I already got my own riped jeans and look better in my own home grown ones than some uptown chick.

Why not expend your money on things that you like? Why buy cheap stuff when you can afford expensive stuff!! And don't compare stuff from Wal-mart with stuff like Armani or Fendi!! They are so not the same quality! Armani is hand made!

because we can and we like the things that we want to buy. It has nothing to do with being a dumb sheep-like american. Every other wealthy country participates. You can still donate to charity and be a smart prson with nice well-mad designer products. Don't judge.
