A Gwinnett County woman wants to ban Harry Potter from schools for being an "evil" influence. She claims that the books lead children to become evil Witches.

The Question:
If Harry Potter is banned, then shouldn't any book that makes reference to magic and witchcraft be banned (such as Cinderella and Macbeth)?
Wouldn't that be fair? If Harry Potter is evil for attempting to save the world, then Cinderella must be evil for using magic to find love. And I suppose that the Little Mermaid is evil for allowing her dad to use his magic triton to make her human. Oh, and apparently Genie from Aladdin is evil. He's a magical creature!

That woman is a crackpot. She should put that excess energy into developing a community project that helps children rather than hinders. Or saving the panda bears in China or the salmon in the Pacific Northwest. If children are reading and educating themselves (not withcraft, but on words) then what is so evil about that? Plus, while some younger children maybe believe that they may be wizards or witches, who cares? At least they have an active and healthy imagination that every child deserves to have. The "magic" does not involve sacrificing people or animals (unless it is pure evil) and the book clearly positions it self against evil.
I greatly dislike it when ignorant people misplace the blame for the evils and wrong doings in society.
So there is my rant. I hope you enjoyed.

I would not support this woman (even though I disagree with the Harry potter books being "great literature" the language in it being slightly crass along with other things) I would not support a banning, but what of the books that a "banned from schools that promote a different world view. Did you know that books with creation references are "banned" (not officially) from school libraries?

I'm against banning books because a) you could make a case to ban nearly every book, including the Bible since it has lots of violence and "begetting", and b) the banned book is often not what the banning proponents think it is.

For an example of b), look at Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, banned for containing the "N word".

Mark Twain was an Abolitionist, not a racist.

Then that school should ban all books about Halloween and all references to Halloween and it's related activities and decorations, including pumpkins and ghosts.

BTW when I talk with people and they say the book should be banned because of the witchcraft...I ask them if their kids get dressed for Halloween...it usually ends the conversation since they realize that have a double standard.

People go overboard.....too much time on their hands and not enough brains.

Anyway, it amazes me how people complain about stuff like that, especially kids books etc. If you don't like it, don't read it/watch it.....it's peoples personal choice isn't it. :)

Rational, intelligent people recognize this.

Sadly, attention starved moms may not.
