Many people are burdened with false info, which they believe is correct. That's probably the major cause of false 'facts' being put out there.
It is not easy, and takes constant vigilance, to keep ones personal data base clean of contamination.
I always try to get additional info sources to double check anything I learn new.

Well there was the one guy (don't remember the name) who posted some stuff on wikipedia just to expose the website for accepting material that is not entirely the truth. But the problem is that wikipedia is user-based information so the accuracy is not 100%. But there was a report a while ago that wikipedia was more accurate than Encyclopedia Brittanica online (I think that was the website).

Many political attacks occur on wikipedia.
An example is facts about acid rain, many of the tree huggers have got on there and put false information about acid rain and global warming
