what does this mean?

What this quote is saying is that we are so bombarded with stuff that we have created a sort of vault door to our minds and we continue to read, but don't actually take in the mindless babble. So if we want to jolt our minds and/or spirit we must read a wonderful piece of writing essentaully giving us the code to the vault and opening up our hearts. In an authors point of view it would be saying that we must write in a manner that sparks immediate reader interest in order to break the top layer of ice that the reader has and get into the liquid center.

The idea is that literature should serve the purpose of awaking emotions in the reader. That if we are not stirred or moved by what we read then why should we read. The author uses the idea of the reader as frozen until the book (the ice axe) breaks open the emotions of the reader. In other words why read if you get nothing out of it.

The author is trying to say that if literature has nothing to say that will grab our attention and alert our minds, it's not worth reading. The second part is saying that literature needs to be a tool to jostle us out of our passivity and spark new ideas.

It means that what you are reading should touch you in some way. Whether it is hitting you emotionally or striking some remembrance. Most people choose certain pieces to read because they interest them and get to them in some way. That is why you read such things.

I think it means if the literature (reading thigy) doesn't keep us interested, why do we read it? It should be something to make us truly involved, or something, I have not idea.
