Oh Goodness, I went through the same thing. I owed like 3 months in charges, and they locked me out, they wouldn't let me in until I had a $0 Balance, and then I went and took everything out. I had to borrow the money to get it! I believe if they try to contact you 3x to pay off your balance due, then they have the right to auction everything off! I'd try and come up with the money somehow, cuz you know when you sign the agreement, you're pretty much giving everything to them, if you don't pay, and they have all the right to do that!

My cousin use to own a public storage. It was awful for him . When someone would not pay there bill he would have to go to the local magistrate and show proof that the person did not pay there bill . Then he would have to pay for a right to enter . He would have to pay $25.00 to get a piece of paper that said he had the right to enter the unit and remove the lock and put his own lock on. Then he would have to send a Thirty-day notice by subpeona to the person who was responsible for the payment of the unit. That again costed him $15.00. The notice would say that you had 30 days to pay the bill in full and THEN remove your belongings. Well if the person did not respond in the thirty days time then he would have to go once again to the magistrate. Show that he did all the proper steps. Then he would have to pay another $50.00 to get a piece of paper stating that due to abandonment of posessions he could take posession of the belongings in the unit. So here he is forking out all of this money for a $45.00 a month storage unit .
I sware the first time he forked out all the money and payed all the fees to get his storage unit back he removed the lock and hahahahaa the unit was full of nothing but clothes that had dry rotted hahahahahahahahaa he payed all that money for old rotten clothes that he could gain nothing from. But now about the sixth person he put out of the unit he got a big screen tv, and some jewelry.
But check with your local magistrate to see what the local laws are about public storage units I am sure they can help you there.

You can pay the back charges before auction & keep your stuff. You have the right to bid & if you are the high bidder you get your stuff. Otherwise the high bidder owns the contents If anybody bids ABOVE the total arrearage & sale costs, you theoretically get the surplus. That NEVER happens.

When they auction it off they keep the money because you owe them for unpaid rent.
