Every culture has contests, sports, and more or less popular people. Simply put it in that context:
"In America, 'Homecoming' is one of the most important high school ball games of the year. After the game, many schools have a dance to celebrate the competition. As part of the festivities, one girl and one boy are chosen by the student body to be 'king' and 'queen' for the night. They dress in their best clothes and wear crowns, and are announced at the dance. For an American high schooler, it's a big honor to be chosen 'queen' by all their peers."

Tell her: In America all schools have football games going on at the same time. In early fall we celebrate Homecoming its a time when all the people who have graduated from the school can come and meet up with others they graduated with. At the same time the students in the school have a big dance where the most well known people have a chance to be the king and queen of the dance. Being the king and queen is of course a great honor.

Tell her that in American schools it is a tradition. The upper class, the one that will graduate this year, votes for two people to serve as "king and queen" for a day. They wear nice clothes and get to celebrate the school's tradition for this one day, and then everything returns to normal.

Tell her it is the princess of the pageant, or the honored lady of the festival....whatever your culture entails. Simply state that it is a competition for the prettiest and most popular girl ( and most "available") in the class.
