My sister said they would be helpful. But we're not looking to buy a house, just an apartment or maybe a townhouse. How much would it cost to have their help, and is it necessary?

okay are you ready for the right answer ... YES absolutely using a realtor is the best and easiest thing to do .. especially if time is of the essence since they will have access to the MLS (multiple listing service) as well as anything else that may be out there.

as far as a fee is concerned ... it depends on the area that you are looking in. some areas it is common for the landlord to pay the brokers fee and in others the tenant does. so you simply need to ask the realtor that you speak to what the policy is in that area.

if you would like a referral to a good broker in the area that you are looking feel free to give me a call at 1-877-472-6810 or send me an email and i would be happy to help you.

good luck

A realtor will be invaluable. I used a realtor to find my appartment, which I did not buy. Legally, they can't charge you anything. The landlord covers the cost.

I've never used one. The newspaper and online somehwere like apartments.com has always worked.

In my area, the "listing" service for rentals is severely lacking inventory becuase its not used much.
