Technically, a modem is only for dial-up style Internet connections. If you are getting broadband (DSL or Cable) you will need an Ethernet card, sometimes called a NIC. And of you plan on connecting to a wireless Internet point (like at Starbucks) you will need a wireless network card. Note that all modern computers come with everything you need.

The Internet service provider you buy your Internet connection from will tell you exactly what you need.

Remember that if you use a Windoze computer you will also have to worry about viruses and spy-ware, so be sure to educate yourself on those topics and learn the proper way to protect compter. You should also consider dumping Internet Explorer and switching to Firefox.

Yes you need a modem to connect to the Internet. But you will have to get the modem for that type of Internet you have. Example Cable Internet will need a Cable modem, DSL Internet will need a DSL modem, and Dialup will need a 56k modem.

Most ISP except Dailup ISPs provide the modems.

The modems like DSL and Cable use a Ethernet/USB cable to connect your PC to the modem. The Ethernet cable will connect to what is called a Network Interface Card on the back of your computer. The USB cord will connect to a USB port.

Yes, your modem is your own personal gateway into the internet...Pretty much like a door into a larger door (your internet service provider or ISP) and then into a spiderweb. It all works together. Maybe one day our technogolies will be combined as one but as for now, we need ingredients before we can get our main course. Here's how it works...1) Computer 2) Modem 3) ISP, i.e. Verizon DSL or Time Warner Cable 4) Internet....Now as to how the info gets to you, just follow the chain of events backwards, 4,3,2,1 and Boom, you got a constant, never ending information flow. This is the basics and hope it helps

When you signed up for comcast Internet, they should have installed (or given you to install) a "box" that your cable cable attachs to. Then either an ethernet or USB cable comes out of the "box" and goes to your computer. That "box" is your cable modem. If you did not get one from comcast, you need to contact them.
