Enkidu is a character in ancient Sumerian mythology. He was a wild man raised by animals who is finally tamed by a harlot named Shamhat. (Kinda like women do with men today ;-) Later Enkidu goes on various adventures with King Gilgamesh in the Epic of Gilgamesh.

By the way, ancient Sumer was between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in the Middle East. The Sumerians practiced a polytheistic religion, with anthropomorphic gods or goddesses representing forces in the world – a lot like Greek mythology.
