I'm doing a paper in my history class and I was assigned to write about how the Ku Klux Klan was important in our history during the 1920's? I have no idea what to write about...someone please give me some idea of how I can start this!

The paper's about how they were important in the 1920's, not now.
I may go to a public school, but this still was my assignment. I am in college. It's not like I'm 13.
I know this is a research paper. I'm getting ideas before I do my research.
Some of you have some really good ideas on how to write the paper. I think the best might be that they motivated the Civil Rights Act.
Keep the good ideas coming!
Thanks to all of you that commented! =D

I JUST started this paper. It's not due for another month. I can't find any information on how they positively contributed to anything. I'm just asking for some ideas. I've already been to the library. I have ten books that just tell about who they were not how they were important. Can you all stop acting like I'm asking you to research my paper for me?! I just want some ideas on the direction I should head in for my paper.

The Klan was important because they exposed the existence of racism in America even after the end of slavery. The majority of America (White People) never experienced racism and were able to believe that the issue of race was eradicated when slavery was abolished. actually, racism in America was and is so deeply ingrained into the psyche of it's citizens that the country has not overcome it even to the present day. Racism still exists and will continue to as long as it's an issue that is easily dismissed and pushed under the rug.
if u use my words in your paper i charge $.50 a letter.

The KKK is still alive in the world today . They believe in having 1 race , which is only white and Christian. They did make a big impact on the U.S. , obviously otherwise you wouldn't be getting so much feedback . They have their own beliefs and I guess they are entitled , just like everyone. I bet you could find info on the net , just type in KKK

they were important only to those who wanted to keep
the black population down and the black persons in
the worst housing, schools, jobs, etc.
this was a highly violent, group who were not only against
everyone black, but also against anyone not protestant.
at the time this meant catholics and jews. killing was a
tool to make their point that anyone who did not belong
to their idea of the proper race or religion should
never never never ever expect to be treated with courtesy
or dignity. even a WASP who treated "them" as though
they were equals could expect to get at the very least
a burning cross in their yard. if they did not learn their
lesson stronger measures would be taken.

It began during reconstruction in Tennessee. Do some research. All you have to do is type it into google. Really, I think you put more effor into creating this question than actually doing a little research

Opinion: A pathetic example of extreme hate mongering and criminal practice based on ignorance, fear, insanity and evil. Was and is. Read books about the history. Take note of the region, economy and political climate. It is disheartening that this exists today.
When I was 7 years old, we were on a road trip. In Maryland, I saw a large billboard, on the highway, depicting three cone-headed and caped horse riders in as dramatic a pose as is found in a movie poster. I had never heard of them. It frightened me more than anything ever has. Here we are 50 years later. I pity people who waste their lives drowning in hate.

Come on now. Do some reading yourself. Yahoo answers is great for people who aren't sure where to find specific stuff but you're asking for someone to do a lot of work for you. Go to your library and get some books on them. You aren't doing yourself a favor.

They are important in our history because they show us how cruel people can be if you are different then them. They are good models of how not to act and how the United States has learned to overcome groups. They still exist and people are still discriminated against but without people like this there would never be change.
