they can sight read a piece really well the first time playing it, would you consider them gifted? Is it really unusual for a pianist to be both an excellent sight reader and someone who can play by ear? If the musician can hear a piece of music and then write out a piano score for it, do you think that's particularly gifted? (I'm not a musician myself. I am just curious about it.) Thanks.

Yes , that would indicate they are knowlegeable about music. If they hear someone sing a note and know what note they are singing they probably have perfect pitch. That person probably is gifted. That person has probably had some music training.

I am an amateur musician (classical) who received a very strong musical education (conservatory).

Being able to tell what key a piece is in from hearing it is called "perfect pitch." It is both a blessing and a curse (usually a blessing) for those who have it. Perfect pitch is a gift, yes, as it lets people sing the most complicated random notes accurately.

It is unusual for a pianist to be able to both play by ear and be a good sight reader. Unless you're spending an awful lot of time at the piano, usually people end up doing one or the other.

There is an apposite Mozart story. The pope forbid anyone from publishing a certain choral piece routinely sung in the 1760s in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Mozart was famous for hearing this (fairly simple) choral piece once (actually twice), and then writing it down.

So, musical memory and the ability to transcribe (write down what you hear) are gifts. They are gifts that can be developed, trained, and put to good (or bad) use, like any other.

Either skill is a matter of training. Simply having a skill does not make someone gifted.

Having a great deal of skill beyond one's years may be the sign of someone gifted. But, even a child prodigy grows up, and, an adult being able to play a Chopin Etude is not such a big deal as hearing a five year old play it.

When I play a new song on my drums, I never read the music to it, I listen to it and follow by sound. I think for you to try and listen to a song and play it is difficult, so to listen to one a write music to it is awesonme. I would agree anyone who can play an instrument well is talented, but gifted is someone who masters it, uses it to change the face of music forever.
