You can download Apache for free. Then it can be running, even while you're using the PC.

First, your comp needs 24/7 internet access, a good one. Then you need about $700 worth of software for convert it into a server. It's all real expensive and the comp doesn't really do anything else but be a server after that. That's for pro servers. If you just want to host your own site, DON'T. Just buy a domain name and web space on another host. Making your own http server is not worth it unless you're working for some HUGE company's website.

windows 2000 and xp comes with a webserver called internet information services (IIS) .

apache is free but harder to configure.

to setup IIS, goto add/remove programs, windows components and make sure the IIS box is checked.

to configure it, goto control panel>admin tools>iis services.

to test it, goto http://120.0.0.1 or http://localhost

if you have a dialup, cable or dsl, you probably have a dynamic ip, which means people from outside (people other then your computer) cant access you since your ip keeps changing. for that you goto no-ip.com and setup and account which lets you run a domain from a dynamic ip, like yourname.no-ip.com

this is pretty much only good for developers who write and test stuff on their own computer - not very usefull for full blown wesites that go on the WWW - then publish to a real webserver.
