Turns out the fruit, orange, was named first -- the name of the fruit comes from the Persian word naranj. The name for the color came into English (and other European languages) after the fruit was brought into Europe in the late Middle Ages.

As a bonus citrus fact, the tangerine is named after the city of Tangiers, Morocco, in north Africa.

In either case, if the orange was purple, we'd call it a purple -- but we'd call it that because we named the color after the fruit.

Maybe something like grapefruit - if only grapefruits were purple. How about a greemon - like a combination of green and lemon? Or a juicy fruit ? (Oops, they already have a gum by that name.)
