In the early days, not much, just a heavy right foot and staying out of trouble. What helped Junior Johnson was his knowledge of carburetors, the Woods Brothers was finding extra tricks and short cuts on pit stops, the Petty's were good at setting up their cars. Now the cars are so complex, a driver needs good engineering knowledge to convey just what the car is doing and what the crew needs to know how to fix it, since the driver has to 'be' the computer as opposed to other 'high tech' forms of racing. It seems this current 'trend' was brought to the fore-front with the extreme knowledge the late 1992 Winston Cup Champion Alan Kulwicki had at setting up his car, even on his 'meger' budget.

Some of the drivers do have college degrees. Ryan Newman has an engineering degree. I believe Elliott Sadler has a bachelor's degree. The biggest thing you need to be a driver is a lengthy and successful background in racing.

A number of them have college degrees... Ryan Newman has a degree in Engineering, Elliott Sadler has a bachelors degree and Dale Jr went to community college and worked at his father's car dealership changing oil before he became a driver. Jr's degree is in the area of auto mechanics.. Most of the drivers are in Nascar due to their talent and driving experience.

I think that a lot of the crew chiefs have degrees in engineering and auto mechanics of areas of that nature.

From high school to a college degree. Main thing is experience from a young age. Dale Jr. just high school, Dale Sr. only went to the 8th grade, Ryan Newmann has a degree from Purdue in Engineering.
