Do you think he is smart to retire while he still has his health intact? Or do you feel he is letting his fans down by retiring while he's still productive?

I just saw it on Espn, and then confirmed it on the Yahoo sports Giants website. Its no ploy, he's under contract until 2008, but is willing to give up 8 million to retire after this season, he wants to be a sportscaster.

Let me give you exactly what he said so that you can make up your minds for yourself. Barber said that he was "leaning toward retiring after this season" and had "pretty much made up his mind". When asked what could make him reconsider, he said "nothing".

Justicemanesq: What I gave was a direct quote from the Giants website. Sportscenter is making it sound even more definte than that. They are saying he's just not interested in football anymore, sad for the fans, but true.

Tiki Barber retiring? Oh say it ain't so! Yes, losing Tiki would definitely be a kick in the face for hardcore football fans (such as myself); nevertheless, if Barber feels that the well has run dry, then so be it. Besides, though it's obvious that he doesn't have the physical health problems that some current/former NFL players have experienced (Example: Jerome Bettis), the game could be affecting other parts of his life. Is it possible that he wants more time with his family? Perhaps he feels mentally drained?

Well I guess if you wanna go out on top then good for him. He's having an awesome season so far as far as rushing yards go. Maybe he'd rather leave it at that, than retire when he's going downhill and getting traded b/c he's a "has been"
I will be sad though if he does. I've always like Tiki even though I'm not a Giants fan.
Best of Luck to him though!

He already has a job lined up with ESPN after he retires, and if and when the Giants are out of the playoffs.

How is he letting down the fans? In 10 years are fans going to be helping him out of bed in the morning because he can't get up; or are fans going to be paying his medical and rehab bills?

Fans are much more loyal to players than players are to fans. he doesn't owe fans a thing other than when he plays.

Actually, he said he'd probably be more likely to retire than not if the season ended today. Brett Farve has said that every year for, uhmmm, 4 years now so it doesn't mean a whole lot.

But yes, if he's thinking about retiring, he's probably making the right decision. There's no law that says you have to play until you can't play anymore.
