You mean 720p; 740p isn't a standard display format. Anyway, 720p means that there are 720 lines of resolution displayed progressively (all at the same time); 1080i means that 1080 lines of resolution are displayed in an interlaced fashion (all the odd lines at once, then followed by all the even lines at once).

Typically, though, a 720p TV set (which is what a majority of HDTV sets are) can display both 720p and 1080i (the two most common formats for high definition broadcast), and you won't notice much difference between them--the 1080i signal is downscaled so that it'll be displayed over the TV's 720 lines of available resolution. Where the signal matters is if you're watching things on a 1080p set, which is capable of displaying 1080 lines of resolution progressively--there, a 1080i signal, which takes advantage of the 1080 available lines of resolution, will look better than a 720p signal, which will need to be "upscaled" by the TV set.

Based on personal experience - 1080i is definitely better

Once you see 740p and then see 1080i on the same tv you will hooked.

We bought a HD tv about two years ago and it is amazing...
I do not have a good eye for these things but even I can tell which signal the stations are broadcasting

After a few minutes - especially on outdoor sporting events - you will be hooked.
