I used to think I was kind when I would trap spiders in my house and let them go outside. Then I was told that the spider will die outside because spiders that take refuge inside need more warmth than ouside spiders.
That being said, how did these spiders live during the winter before human settlements? Have they migrated with humans from warmer climates or did they evolve to live this way?

Great question. I know of one spider, Meta Menardi (sp?), which seeks shelter in caves; the temperature underground remains constant year-round. This particular spider has adapted to cave life, however, and can survive where others cannot. For the others, I think your suggestion of migration with humans is probably the best answer; if cats, rats and roaches can do it, why not spiders?

First of all the information provided to you was bogus..... Mnay of th common spiders found in your house belong to the family Clubionidae, these are the sac spiders. They are native to your part of the world, so no they do notdie if they venture outside. Other groups of spiders are the cellar spiders and many common jumping and funnel webs, these all occur outdoors if a cozy home is not available. Spiders simply take full advantage of the warmth if they can, but they dont require it, except maybe in the winter. Many will over winter in houses simply because it is a better site than beneath tree bark or under rocks.
If you release one of these spiders out onto the snow in winter then yes, they will die, but in the middle of summer, they will go about their lives as if you never removed them in the first place....

hope this clears up some confusion!

Dont believe everything you hear.... I always catch spiders in my house and put them outside, and they do not all die I have seen some of the spiders I put outside build webs where I put them etc. I am sorry to say but all the spiders in your house originally come from outside, and they can still survive out there..... Seriously think about it, when a house is first built it's empty, but spiders from outside eventually move in through cracks etc, point is they came from outside, and they can go back out there and survive unless you threw one out on the snow in the middle of winter. Whoever told you that they would die outside is wrong...
